What are a skirt / skirting?
It can be defined as a solid band of horizontal wood members which are installed around the deck perimeter to conceal the exposed ends of joists and deck boards. Another definition that can be given is a finishing element at the baseboard of the stairway, around the circle perimeter or around posts.

The open area beneath the raised decks can serve as a storage space for items such as lawn mowers or other garden tools. Some may prefer covering it with an easy to open gate to get access to the storage space. A gate may also be constructed to completely close the area except for general deck inspection and maintenance purposes.
However, if you prefer to hide the area completely, deck skirting serves the purpose. Usually made of wood, it is inexpensive yet attractive way is using lattice in the skirting. A lattice is a checkered piece of flimsy, attractive and affordable woo. It can be painted or stained to match the color of the deck.
Flowers, trees, surrounding the deck skirting can be great in enhancing the general look of a skirting. Flower pots or benches in front of the skirting will also incorporate the deck and the screen into the overall design of the yard.

Another variation from the traditional deck skirting is a skirting board with small plastic end fittings instead of using just the bare fibre. These end fittings serve to diffuse the lights so that a larger, less sharp spots of lights ca be dotted along the skirting board. A combination of the two approaches can be done by alternating the diffuse lights of the end fittings with the sharper spots of light emanating from the bare fibre ends.
